Handwoven Hemp Fabric Indigo

$24.00

Gorgeous textural hemp fabric - traditionally handwoven and naturally dyed in classic indigo blue.

Harvested, woven and dyed by hand by Hmong Hill Tribe villagers in rural Vietnam, this thick woven fabric makes a beautiful table runner or placements. An inspiring addition to the craft stash, lovely for slow stitch and sewing projects.

Fabric measures approx 35cm wide, price is for 1/2 metre, sold in 1/2 metre increments.

Fabric comes to you in a smooth, ironed state. A gentle handwash in lukewarm water reveals it's more textural nature, as is pictured alongside the ironed state.  As is often the case with hand dyed indigo, expect a small amount of dye residue during washing.

Hemp is grown by the Hmong tribeswomen, dried, then the fibre stripped from the stem and pounded, boiled, spun and coated with wax before being strung on an old wooden loom and woven into the finished fabric. All year around the tribeswomen can be seen with hemp fibres wound around their hands, using what spare time they have to connect the separate fibres to make one use-able thread.

We do our best to represent our fabrics accurately but please allow for colour variations in monitors/screens.

CARE: gentle handwash in cool-lukewarm water with a gentle soap, such as lanolin liquid soap, rinse and smooth wrinkles before drying naturally in the shade. Expect some dye run-off during washing. Adding salt to the first wash may assist in reducing dye run-off.
