Botanical Dye Silk Ribbon - Tribe Castlemaine

Botanical Dye Silk Ribbon

$30.00

Rustic recycled silk sari ribbon botanically dyed-by-hand in gentle, earthy colours.

A lovely addition to any textile stash - explore the possibilities for weaving, crochet, jewellery making, textile art, gift wrapping, floral arrangements, home decor and fibre based craft projects.

Recycling silk wedding saris is a cottage industry run by women in villages around Bangalore, India, saving waste from landfill. Each ball has it's own rustic character, with frayed edges, varying widths and textures and irregular sewn and knotted joins throughout.

Locally the ribbon is botanically dyed-by-hand - a slow, multi-step process of preparing the fabric and gently extracting colours, with locally foraged plants and botanical extracts.

Each ball is unique, as no two dye pots are the same, variegations in colour are part of their natural charm.

Ribbon comes to you in its crinkled, un-ironed state, with width varying approx 1-3cm throughout each length.

Created in very small batches, this ribbon comes in balls, measuring 20 metres length also on card bobbins measuring 10 metre length.

Natural colours evolve over time, as all things in nature do. Exposure to sun hastens the process. Occasional gentle handwash only, dry in shade, some dye run-off possible.

I do my best to represent colours accurately, naturally dyed textiles reflect different tones and depths of colour in different lights. Please allow for variations which occur with different screens and monitors.

Handmade in Castlemaine by Tribe with silk ribbon fair trade sourced from India.
